Photo to Coloring Page

Upload a photo and IMG AI redraws it as a coloring page: your subject, pose, and composition kept, the background simplified, and black outlines on plain white paper with closed areas you can actually fill. Choose Simple for thick lines and large regions or Detailed to keep eyes, windows, and petals, then download a single-page PDF or a 300 dpi PNG at US Letter or A4 size.

Photo

Coloring page

A toy car with large fillable panels

Simple keeps the big panels of a toy car — roof, doors, windows, wheels — as separate closed regions while dropping the chrome reflections and the studio shadow. That is what makes the page work with wax crayons: a child can fill the door without the color running into the body. Check that the wheel arch meets the body line; that join is what keeps the lower body one region instead of three.

Simple · US Letter

A pet whose face survives the redraw

Fur is where a redraw either works or fails. An outline map of a long-haired animal collapses into a black mass; here the eyes, nose, ears, and chest marking stay readable while the coat is reduced to a contour rather than a texture. Detailed is the setting that keeps a whisker line and the shape of the muzzle, so pick it for pets and faces and keep Simple for objects.

Detailed · A4

Small bouquet of daisies and tulips in a clear glass vase on a white table against a pale wall

Coloring page of the same bouquet with each petal closed and separate stems in the vase
Coloring page

A bouquet with petals closed and stems readable

Flowers fail the other way: trace every stem and leaf and the page becomes a thicket with nothing left to color. The redraw keeps each bloom as one closed petal shape and reduces the stems to a few readable strokes, so the bouquet stays a coloring page rather than a line drawing of a hedge. Detailed adds the inner petal line; Simple leaves a single outline per flower.

The direct answer

How do I turn a photo into a coloring page?

Upload the photo, choose Simple or Detailed, and generate. IMG AI sends your image to an image-to-image model with a fixed instruction written for this page: keep the subject, pose, composition, and recognisable features, simplify the background, and draw black outlines on white with every fillable area closed. You then compare the result against the original, pick a paper size, and download a single-page PDF or a 300 dpi PNG.

Both detail levels use the same model at 4K. The level changes the instruction, not the price: Simple asks for fewer, thicker major outlines and larger merged regions, while Detailed asks the model to keep eyes and nose, doors and windows, and individual petals. Either way the output is black lines on white — no grey shading, no hatching, no texture noise. A grey-toned pencil sketch is not a coloring page: the child cannot tell where a fill stops, and a printer renders the tone as muddy halftone.

A generation costs 40 credits and needs a signed-in account, because the photo is uploaded and the model runs on our servers. The finished task stays in My Creations like every other IMG AI image. You only pay for the generation itself: once a page is finished you can switch between US Letter and A4, or download the PDF and then the PNG, as many times as you like — none of that submits another task or spends another credit.

How do I print a coloring page at the right size?

The file you download already has the page size baked in, so the printer only has to be told to trust it.

  1. Generate, then check the lines before you print

Look at the result against the original at full size. If a region is broken, switch to the other detail level and generate again — Simple for larger areas, Detailed when a face or a window went missing. It is cheaper to fix the line art than to discover an open outline after printing thirty copies.

  2. Pick the paper before you download

Choose US Letter (216 × 279 mm) or A4 (210 × 297 mm). The PDF page box is exactly that size and the drawing is centred with an 8 mm margin, so nothing lands outside the printable area of a home printer. Switching the paper re-lays out the same line art without a new generation.

  3. Print at 100% with no scaling

In the print dialog set the scale to 100% or "Actual size" and turn off "Fit to page". Fit to page rescales the sheet, which breaks the margin and thins the outlines; a PDF that is already the right size needs no help.

  4. Use plain paper and normal quality

The page is bilevel, so a laser printer or an inkjet on plain paper reproduces it exactly. Draft or high-quality modes only change how dark the black is; they cannot add grey, because the file has none.

What makes a photo suitable for coloring?

A coloring page is built from areas, not from detail. The best source photo has one clear subject, a background that differs from it in tone, and large shapes an outline can enclose: a toy with flat panels, an animal sitting against a plain rug, a bunch of flowers in front of a wall. Those photos give the model big regions to hold on to, so the page has broad spaces instead of a hairball of lines.

Photos that fight the tool share two traits: heavy texture and low separation. Fur photographed against a matching carpet, a tree canopy, gravel, a patterned shirt and a busy street all ask for detail that a fillable page cannot carry, and the result is either a black mass or a sparse broken line. Changing the detail level will not recover information the photo never separated.

You do not have to reshoot. Crop to the subject, choose the frame where it fills most of the picture, and prefer a photo with side light: side light creates a clear edge between two tones, and a clear edge is what becomes a line. A flat flash photo of the same subject gives one tone from edge to edge and almost no outlines.

Photos that redraw well

  • One subject that fills most of the frame
  • A background clearly lighter or darker than the subject
  • Large, simple shapes: a body, a face, a petal, a wheel
  • Even, side-lit exposure with visible edges between tones
  • Little pattern on clothing, upholstery, or ground

Photos that redraw poorly

  • Texture on texture: fur on a rug, leaves on grass
  • Very low contrast between the subject and its background
  • A wide scene where the subject is a small part of the frame
  • Motion blur, heavy grain, or a phone night shot
  • Several overlapping subjects with no gap between them

What people print coloring pages for

Classroom and home worksheets

Redraw a photo of a school mascot, a local animal, or a historical object into a page a whole class can color. Generate once, then print as many copies as the class needs without submitting another task, so one generation covers the entire lesson.

Birthday parties and activity tables

Use a photo of the birthday child, the family dog, or the party theme as the activity sheet. Simple gives big areas that suit wax crayons and younger guests; Detailed keeps small features like an eye or a collar for older children with fine pens.

Keepsakes and greeting cards

A pet portrait or a house photo becomes a page a child can color and sign. Print the PDF on card stock at the same 100% scale, and the 8 mm margin leaves room for a border or a message without touching the drawing.

Practice sheets for drawing and tracing

The same bilevel output works as a tracing guide: the closed outlines show where a shape starts and stops. Print one copy as a coloring page and keep another as a reference for a child learning to draw the subject.

Photo to coloring page vs AI coloring-page generators vs edge-detect filters vs hand tracing

Four routes produce something that looks like a coloring page. They differ in whose picture you get back, whether the output is fillable, and what it costs per sheet.

IMG AI photo to coloring page

Your own photo redrawn as fillable outlines, sized for paper, for one fixed 4K price.

Upload a photo, pick Simple or Detailed, generate, compare with the original, choose US Letter or A4, and download a single-page PDF or a 300 dpi PNG. Re-layout and re-download are free after the first generation.

It is a paid generation that needs an account and uploads the photo, and it cannot invent detail the photo does not separate — a low-contrast or heavily textured photo still gives a sparse page.

AI coloring-page generators

A fresh, decorative picture from a text description rather than from your photo.

Type a subject, pick a style, and the model draws a new image styled like a coloring page, then you download it.

The model starts from a prompt instead of your picture, so the family dog comes back as a generic dog, and every new sheet needs a new prompt rather than a new photo.

Photo-filter and edge-detect apps

A quick stylised sketch of a photo, usually with tone and shading left in.

Apply a sketch or edge filter to the photo and export the result as an image.

The output is a grey halftone sketch: edges are broken, shading stays in, and printed fills leak across the page. It reads as a drawing, not as a worksheet, and the exported file is sized for a screen rather than for paper.

Hand tracing in vector software

Maximum control for a single artwork that a person will redraw by hand.

Place the photo, trace the contours with a pen tool or a stylus, close each path, set the stroke weight, and export to PDF.

It gives the cleanest result and takes the longest per sheet, and it needs both the software and the drawing skill; a set of thirty pages is a project rather than an afternoon.

Choose IMG AI when the point is your own subject, a fillable page, and a print-ready file in one step. Choose a prompt-driven generator when you want a brand-new decorative drawing, a filter when you only need a sketch for a screen, and hand tracing when one artwork deserves a specialist’s time.

What the output actually is

The generated page is thresholded to a bilevel bitmap before export: pure black lines, pure white paper, no anti-aliasing and no shading. The PDF embeds that bitmap directly as a one-bit image, centred inside an 8 mm margin, on a page box that matches the paper you chose. Switching paper size lays the same finished bitmap out again; it never asks the model for new lines.

Photo to Coloring Page FAQ

How much does a photo to coloring page cost?

One generated page costs 40 credits, the site-wide 4K tier, and the price is the same for Simple and Detailed. The cost is shown next to your balance before you submit. Re-laying out the result for another paper size, or downloading the PDF and then the PNG, does not cost anything extra because no second generation runs.

Do I need an account, and is my photo uploaded?

You need an account, because the redraw runs on IMG AI servers rather than in your browser. Selecting a photo on the page keeps it on your device, and nothing is uploaded until you click Generate; from that point the photo is uploaded to our storage, sent to the image model, and the finished task is kept in My Creations. Read the privacy policy before uploading a photo of someone else.

What is the difference between Simple and Detailed?

Simple asks the model for fewer, thicker major outlines and larger merged regions, which suits young children and wax crayons. Detailed asks it to keep more structure — eyes and nose on a face or animal, doors and windows on a building, individual petals on a flower — which suits older children with colored pencils. Both run the same model at 4K for the same price; only the instruction changes.

Will the page be grey or pure black and white?

Pure black and white. Every pixel of the exported page is either #000 or #FFF, and the PDF stores the image as a 1-bit bitmap, so a printer has no grey to reproduce. The model is instructed not to add shading, hatching, or texture noise, and the export step thresholds whatever tone is left before writing the file.

How do I get the PDF to print at the correct size?

The PDF page box is already set to the paper you chose: 612 × 792 points for US Letter and 595.28 × 841.89 points for A4. In the print dialog choose 100% or Actual size and switch off Fit to page. The drawing is centred with an 8 mm margin and keeps the photo aspect ratio, so it is never stretched or cropped.

Why did my photo come back with too few lines?

The model draws what the photo separates. When the subject and background are almost the same brightness, or the subject is a mass of texture such as fur on a matching rug, there is little for it to hold on to and the page comes back sparse. Crop closer to the subject, choose a frame with stronger side light, or switch between Simple and Detailed and generate once more.

What happens if a generation fails?

A failed generation returns the reserved credits automatically, and the page shows the real error with a retry. Double-clicking Generate, refreshing mid-submit, or losing the connection does not start a second paid task: the page looks the same request up again instead of submitting it, so at most one generation and one settlement happen per request.
